Bad News on the Bettie Page Front

Posted in by nina on the April 21st, 2006

Well, in today’s Star Tribune, Colin Covert gave Bettie Page 2 stars. This is a bad sign coming from the guy who gave the last (awful) Charlie’s Angels film high ratings, waxing on about various posing by the gals. Generally Colin (a good reviewer whose tastes we generally trust) is very generous with movies featuring attractive women in semi-lurid situations. We were hoping BP would be campy, but it just seems dull.

Merger, Aquisitions and Rapid Consolidation

Dylan has left a post or two on the “I Love Music” site, home for all obsessive-compulsive music fans, critics, and youthful fans who want to be critics some day. It is in reference to Chuck Eddy, long-time music editor for the Village Voice, being the latest victim in the takeover of VVM from New Times Media.

Slippery Slopes

Well, we just signed up for NetFlix. Dylan couldn’t find a Barbara Steisand video for his story, and they have it. Plus the few times we ever watch videos we’re always weeks late returning them. Plus to add to that, we got hooked on “The Amazing Race” reality show when trapped in a hotel room last month, and have watched it 3 times now. We love it!

Easter Eggs

Before the easter eggs, we hosted an over-indulgent kid’s birthday party. As Sari said “We’re sending our kid to the moon, on a pony.” Sure was fun though.

Lyrics…

I noticed someone was looking for some lyrics to Dylan’s music in the internal search box. We don’t have them, however, we had created them in the old website and they are still sort of available. Dylan Hicks’s Lyrics from Alive With Pleasure. Now, the song that this person was looking for “Things to Do” was from his second album, and which we don’t have the lyrics for online. He wrote the song when I was in NYC visiting Sam Gillison.

Images Galore!

Hey look at this photo I found on the web of Dylan. I’ve never seen this. I think it’s pretty old. Here’s my carbon dating technique. Dylan was still wearing a watch, so this isn’t within the past few years. But he’s playing a piano we got on a road trip in 1999 when I was finishing grad school. So sometime between 99 and 03. I really love google image search.

Coyness Cannot be Substituted for Work

Refer to Dylan’s comment in the previous post

It can’t?! Damn!

btw - this is from my excellent primer “The Art of Being a Successful Business Girl” circa 1930. To think I wasted all that time in business school when I could have just read this book!

Bring it on!

I have a new prescription that warns: “may cause loss of appetite, if you experience weight loss call your doctor.” Uh, yeah, I’ll get right on that.

What Are You Reading?

Posted in by nina on the April 11th, 2006

When I was an uptight young thing interviewing for the corporate world, I would actually prepare this question for interviews, having all sorts of smart provocative untrue answers. My main book interest then was fantasy and now it’s mystery. Right now I’m reading Keeping Watch by Laurie King (actually I’m sitting in bed with the laptop running reports for clients) and the last book I read was CivilWarLand in Bad Decline by George Saunders (who btw, had a very funny piece in a recent New Yorker). Dylan is reading Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, and the last book he read (but didn’t finish) was The Ethics by Benedict de Spinoza. How about you?

Also, I have discovered that the Google toolbar has a spellchecker function which has solved my frustration with the lack of one on the blog software.

Re-doing your music library

So y’all can live in a world of digital music, but we prefer the physical object. However, I’m more open to digital than Dylan and I have terrible ‘ears’ so I’m content listening to iTunes off my little laptop speakers. However I had a hard drive crash and lost everything (yes, everything, which actually caused me to cry on Friday). Anyways, I’m starting iTunes afresh (not everything was on my iPod) and here are the first CD’s to make it on (actually there is a big pile, but here are some of them:

  • Julie London, “Cry me a River” and a few others from her greatest hits.
  • 50 Cent, The Massacre, with the aforementioned “Candy Shop.”
  • Caetano Veloso, Noites do Norte.
  • Fiona Apple, Extarordinary Machine.
  • The Hold Steady, Separation Sunday.
  • John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, with “My One and Only Love” featured in Dylan’s and my wedding 10.5 years ago.
  • The Band, Prince, John Prine, R. Kelly, Sufjan Stevens, Ali Hassan Kuban, Ben Webster, Fela Kuti, etc,

Now I have to go find more. What I listen to in the office is different than at the gym or out on the greenway. When I work out it’s almost all hip-hop.
